Is Ishaan Khatter India’s Jonathan Bailey? Netflix Roasted Over The Royals vs Bridgerton Comparison

Netflix India's attempt to promote its latest period drama ‘The Royals’ has backfired, drawing sharp criticism on social media.

Netflix India's attempt to promote its latest period drama ‘The Royals’ has backfired, drawing sharp criticism on social media. The streaming giant recently shared a series of side-by-side images on Instagram, likening the Ishaan Khatter-led show to the globally acclaimed ‘Bridgerton’. The post instead ignited a wave of backlash from viewers who felt the comparison was far-fetched, especially given The Royals' mixed reception and ongoing criticism.

The Royals vs Bridgerton

One image showed Ishaan on horseback, visually echoing a scene with Jonathan Bailey from ‘Bridgerton’. Another showed a ballroom moment between Ishaan and Nora Fatehi, paired with a similar dance scene featuring Jonathan Bailey and Simone Ashley. Additional comparisons included poolside visuals and moments between Ishaan and Sakshi Tanwar (who plays his mother) placed next to similar scenes with Bridgerton’s Jonathan and Ruth Gemmell.

Here's how Bridgerton fans reacted to the post

However, the post didn’t sit well with many users online. Social media quickly lit up with criticism, accusing Netflix of making an unfair comparison. A comment read, “Meesho version of Bridgerton.” A user wrote, “Can’t compare with Kanthony- not even the slightest!! The best part of the show is Sakshi.” A fan wrote, “Bollywood is a grave yard of copycats. Be original not copies of originals.” Another comment read, “There should be no comparison between Ferrari and Fiat.” Another user said, “I thought The Royals was the joke of the century but I guess this post beats it.”

With a storyline many have called flimsy and lead performances lacking spark, 'The Royals' has struggled to impress, making Netflix’s attempt to liken it to Bridgerton all the more eyebrow-raising for viewers and critics alike.

Meanwhile, Ishaan Khatter is currently attending the 2025 Cannes Film Festival for the premiere of his film 'Homebound', which is featured in the prestigious Un Certain Regard section. The film also stars Janhvi Kapoor and Vishal Jethwa in prominent roles.
