New Delhi: Diljeet Dosanjh will be seen essaying the role of popular Punjabi singer Amar Singh Chamkila with Parineeti Chopra playing his love interest, Amarjeet Kaur in Imtiaz Ali's next directorial venture 'Chamkila'. Amar Singh Chamkila's enormous success came to an end in 1988 at the age of just 27 when the singer along with his wife and two members of their band were shot to death.

Who was Amar Singh Chamkila?

Amar Singh Chamkila was born on July 21, 1960, and always had a passion for music. He composed songs while working at a textile plant. He began singing them and became well-known for his song Takue Te Takua, which was widely covered and propelled him to popularity. He rose to fame in Punjabi villages under the stage name "Chamkila." He performed multiple duets with a variety of female vocalists before settling on Amarjot Kaur as his reliable singing companion.

Fame and popularity

When Chamkila passed away, he was at the height of his fame. He was previously referred to as the "Elvis of Punjab" by singer Amit Trivedi, which was the nickname he was given at the time. According to his biography, Awaz Mardi Nahin by Gulzar Singh Shaunki, the workaholic singer once performed 366 gigs in 365 days due to the demand for him.

Chamkila's Songs

Chamkila wrote songs with lyrics about extramarital affairs, coming of age, drinking, drug use, and Punjabi men's customs. Pehle Lalkare Naal, Baba Tera Nankana, and Talwar Main Kalgidhar Di are just a few of the songs he produced. Both the albums Hikk Utte So Ja Ve from 1981 and Jija Lak Minle from 1980 by Chamkila and Amarjot had a number of popular songs.

Chamkila's Death

In Mehsampur, Punjab, Chamkila and his wife were getting out of a car before their performance when they were mercilessly shot and killed in broad daylight by unknown assailants who rode up on bikes and then fled the area. But no one was ever arrested in relation to the incident, and the case was never solved. It is suspected that Sikh militants were responsible for it.

Chamkila Teaser

The teaser opens with a crowd waiting in front of a stage as the next performer is introduced. The singer is introduced with words, ‘Jawan dilon ki muskaan, aur buzurgo ki shaan, the ‘greatest singer of his time’. Diljit then enters holding an ektara. He plays Punjab's highest record-selling artiste Amar Singh Chamkila in the film.
