Oscars 2022 Shortlist: Rintu Thomas Is Elated As 'Writing With Fire' Advances To Next Level
'Writing With Fire' is among the fifteen movies that have advanced to the next round in the documentary feature category at the Oscars 2022.
New Delhi: The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science on Wednesday (December 22) announced the shortlists in ten award categories for the Oscars 2022. 'Writing With Fire', which has been directed by Delhi-based Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh, has advanced to the next level in the category of Documentary Feature for the 94th Academy Awards.
Rintu Thomas took to Twitter to share the screenshot of the announcement and express her excitement. She said that it was a great moment for India and her team after 'Writing With Fire' was shortlisted among 15 films for the 'Documentary Feature' category.
"#WritingWithFire is on the @TheAcademy Shortlist. What a moment for my entire team behind this indie Indian doc. What a moment for the Indian documentary community. We are richer with the stories we choose to tell, big love @KhabarLahariya," Thomas wrote on the micro-blogging site.
'Writing With Fire' showcased the rise of Khabar Lahariya, which is India's only newspaper run by Dalit women. It chronicled the journey of an ambitious group of Dalit women, who switched from print to digital to stay relevant.
The documentary is among the fifteen movies that have entered the next round of the upcoming edition of Academy Awards. One hundred thirty-eight films were originally eligible in the 'Best Documentary Feature' category.
The other titles, which have been shortlisted, include- Ascension, Attica, Faya Dayi, The First Wave, Billie Eilish: The World's a Little Blurry, Flee, Julia, President, Procession, The Rescue, In the Same Breath, Simple as Water, The Velvet Underground and Summer of Soul ( Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised).
Pebbles Out Of Oscars Race
'Pebbles', which was selected as India's official entry in the category of International Feature Film, failed to advance to the next round. The critically acclaimed flick, which was directed by Vinothraj PS. It focused on the story of an alcoholic abusive husband who, after his long-suffering wife runs away, attempts to bring her back with the assitance of his son.
The organisers will announce the final nominations on February 8, 2022. The much-awaited awards ceremony is scheduled to be conducted on March 27.
