'To Avoid Depression, I Act’: When SRK Talked About His Coping Mechanisms After Parents' Death, Mentioned His Sister Shahnaz
Shah Rukh Khan shared the impact of his parents' untimely demise on his life and his sister Shahnaz's.

Even though Shah Rukh Khan has always had an irresistible screen presence, the King of Bollywood has had his share of problems offscreen. In an old viral clip, he can be seen discussing his methods for overcoming the immense sadness he felt after losing both of his parents at a young age. Shah Rukh also spoke out about his sister Shahnaz's battle with depression and how he drew inspiration from her.
Both of Shah Rukh Khan’s parents passed away while he was young; Mir Taj Mohammed Khan died when he was fourteen, and Lateef Fatima Khan died ten years later. As a result of her loss, Shahnaz, who was Shah Rukh's sister, fell into an intense sadness that lasted for two years. During a media interaction, Shah Rukh Khan revealed the devastating effects of his parents' death on his sister Shahnaz's life.
Shah Rukh Khan's Bond With His Sister
SRK shared a particular memory, saying, "I remember my sister standing in front of my father's dead body. She just looked, she didn't cry, she didn't say anything. She just fell 'thud' and hit her head on the ground. And for two years after that, she didn't cry, she didn't speak. She just kept looking into space. It just changed her world. Now, she is better. She got some deficiencies."
While filming his legendary film 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' (DDLJ), Shah Rukh said that Shahnaz was hospitalised and doctors were afraid she wouldn't make it. "I took her to Switzerland and got her treated while I was shooting 'Tujhe Dekha Toh Ye Jaana Sanam,' recalled the actor.
Praising his sister, SRK added, "I love my sister how she is. She is a much better person than I can ever be. I think she's a child of God and very naive and innocent. My kids love her more than they love me and my wife. I am very glad she's a part of my life like this. But I don’t have the guts to be so simple."
"She was highly qualified, very intelligent. But she could not face the reality of losing her parents and I somehow developed the sense of detachment," Shah Rukh said.
Shah Rukh Khan's Coping Mechanisms
Even though they were both grieving, Shah Rukh's reaction was unique. The sadness, he said, was beyond his understanding, but he knew he had to go on nevertheless. He said, "I think I would be in the same state of potassium deficiency and depression. So, to avoid depression, I act."
