Vicky Kaushal In Talks To Play Guru Dutt In Upcoming Biopic

Vicky Kaushal may portray legendary filmmaker Guru Dutt in a biopic. Ultra Media plans both a web series and film on the icon’s life and legacy. Bhansali’s Love & War also delayed due to rain.

Vicky Kaushal, known for winning over both audiences and critics with his powerful performances, is reportedly in discussions to portray the legendary filmmaker and actor Guru Dutt in an upcoming biopic. The versatile actor has left a lasting impact with films like 'Sardar Udham' and 'Sam Bahadur', showcasing his ability to handle emotionally complex roles.

Guru Dutt biopic

According to a recent report by Mid-day, Vicky Kaushal is the top contender to step into the shoes of the iconic Guru Dutt, known for timeless classics such as 'Pyaasa', 'Kaagaz Ke Phool', and 'Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam'.

The report further states that Ultra Media & Entertainment Group, which owns the rights to Guru Dutt’s films, is planning to adapt some of his most celebrated works into a web series, alongside developing a feature-length biopic on his life and legacy.

Rajat Agrawal, COO and Director at Ultra, shared insights into the project’s early development: “While biopics are always challenging because they need to emulate an individual’s greatness and achievements, we would be happy to collaborate with producers and a modern-day director who is a fanatic of Guru Dutt, and see where the project goes.”

Agrawal also revealed that he has initiated conversations with two well-known directors for both the web adaptation and the biopic.

“I have spoken to two highly revered directors, who are interested in recreating his movies into web series and also making a film on his life. Once we have something definite, we can talk about it in detail. We are in touch with his family members."

As for the actor who could do justice to Guru Dutt’s nuanced personality and melancholic charm? Agrawal remarked: “It’s hard to name just one, given the abundance of talent today. But I believe Vicky Kaushal has the ability to portray Guru Dutt ji’s emotional depth.”

Vicky Kaushal’s Upcoming Projects

Beyond this biopic, Vicky Kaushal will next be seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s highly anticipated film Love & War, alongside Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt. However, the film’s shoot has recently faced delays due to heavy monsoon rains in Mumbai, which caused significant damage to the set.

A source quoted by Mid-day said:“It was a key dramatic sequence that was set outdoors and required specific lighting. But with waterlogging and unpredictable weather, it became impossible to go ahead. Bhansali sir didn’t want to compromise on the scene’s visual quality or the safety of his crew. It’s a unit of 500-plus, and some members live in far-off areas. It was impossible for them to reach the set due to train disruptions.”

Both actors, Kaushal and Kapoor, have reportedly undergone physical transformations, including weight loss, for their respective roles in Love & War.
