Abhishek Bachchan Opens Up About Early Failures And How ‘Dhoom’ Changed Everything

Abhishek Bachchan recalls being ignored before ‘Dhoom’ made him a star, and the life-changing advice Hrithik Roshan gave him.

Abhishek Bachchan has opened up about the harsh realities of fame and failure in a candid conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India. Entering the film industry in 2000 with his debut film 'Refugee', Abhishek was greeted with praise, but a string of box-office disappointments soon followed, something that deeply impacted his sense of identity as a public figure.

Abhishek talks about his life

Recalling his early years, Abhishek shared how being the son of megastars Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan brought sky-high expectations, but little cushioning against rejection. “I’ve walked into rooms where nobody even turns and looks at you,” he said. “I expected it to make a difference because I’m a film star… and then, nobody comes.”

He explained how the lack of public recognition, especially in spaces where he anticipated adulation, was both humbling and hurtful. But it also made him value appreciation when it finally arrived.

‘Dhoom’ Changed Everything

The tide turned in 2004 with the release of 'Dhoom', a film that catapulted Abhishek to mainstream popularity. “A couple of months later, Dhoom comes out, and you walk into the Marriott, and the lobby comes to a standstill,” he recalled. “You only value that because you’ve been on the other end.”

The success of 'Dhoom' not only gave him the validation he had longed for but also a renewed work ethic. “You never want to go back there, so you work even harder,” he stated. “Actors are very fragile people… You’re looking for validation.”

Hrithik Roshan’s Advice: “Now you have something to lose”

In a touching moment after 'Dhoom's release, fellow actor Hrithik Roshan congratulated him with words that left a lasting impression. “He hugged me, and he said… ‘Till now it was nothing, your problems start now. Now you have something to lose.’”

That simple yet profound advice helped ground Abhishek and gave him clarity in navigating fame. “It’s kept me so aligned to what has happened,” he added.

From being overlooked in hotel lobbies to commanding undivided attention, Abhishek’s journey is a reminder of resilience and the ever-evolving nature of stardom.
