Aamir Khan Recalls Saying No To Underworld Party Invite: 'You Can Tie My Hands, But...'
Aamir Khan opens up about refusing an underworld party invitation in the 1990s. The actor shares details of pressure, fear for his family, and standing his ground in a rare interview.

In a rare revelation about the shadowy overlap between Bollywood and the underworld in the late 1980s and 1990s, superstar Aamir Khan recently opened up about a chilling encounter from the early days of his stardom. Speaking to The Lallantop, the actor shared how he once stood his ground against an invitation from underworld figures, refusing to attend a party reportedly hosted in the Middle East.
The Underworld Knocked, But Aamir Stood Firm
Aamir Khan rose to nationwide fame with the 1988 release 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak', directed by his cousin Mansoor Khan. As his popularity soared in the 1990s, so did the attention—from both fans and some darker quarters of society. During that period, he was approached with an offer to attend a party—believed to be in Dubai—hosted by members of the underworld.
“I’d said no to the invite to attend their party in the Middle East, probably Dubai. Some people from the underworld had visited me to invite me to the party,” said Aamir Khan. Although he refused to name the individuals involved, he made it clear that their efforts to coerce him lasted weeks.
“They tried a lot. They offered me money and offered to get any work done of my choosing. I still refused to come,” Aamir revealed, describing how the tone of the conversation quickly changed once he held his ground. “They quickly changed their tone and said I’d have to come now because my presence had already been announced, and it was a prestige issue.”
That pressure didn’t change his stance. “That was our last meeting. I said, ‘You’ve been meeting for a month and I’ve been telling you right from the start that I wouldn’t come. You’re very powerful so you can bash me up, hit me on the head, tie my hands and legs, and take me forcibly wherever you want, but I wouldn’t come on my own.’ So they stopped contacting me after that.”
The actor admitted he was scared during the ordeal, not for himself, but for his family. “I had two small kids then. My parents were very concerned. They said, ‘What are you doing? They’re very dangerous.’ So I had said only one thing to them then, ‘I want to live my life the way I want. I don’t want to go there,’” Aamir shared.
“I was more concerned for the ones close to me,” he added. At the time, Aamir and then-wife Reena Dutta were raising their two children, Junaid and Ira Khan.
Interestingly, years later, Aamir was in talks to play late music producer Gulshan Kumar, who himself fell victim to underworld violence in 1997, in a biopic titled Mogul. However, he eventually stepped away from the project.
