How Voting Works: Step-By-Step Guide To The Polling Process Ahead Of General Elections 2024
Knowing the voting process is crucial for every citizen participating in elections. For all first-time voters, ABP Live brings this detailed article to know all about the polling process.
Understanding the voting process is crucial for every citizen participating in elections. Here's a detailed guide on how to navigate the polling process seamlessly.
Step-By-Step Guide To The Polling Process:
The date and hours for voting are determined by the Election Commission of India (ECI) and are widely publicised before elections. Upon arrival at the polling station, queues are organised for men, women, and physically challenged individuals. Each queue supervisor admits 3-4 voters at a time, prioritising physically challenged and women with infants.
Stage 1: Identification:
Upon entering the polling station, approach the First Polling Officer responsible for the electoral roll and voter identification. Have your identity document ready for verification. An unofficial identity slip may assist in locating your name but does not guarantee identification. Your name and serial number will be called out to avoid identity challenges.

Stage 2: Registration:
If your identity is verified, proceed to the Second Polling Officer. Your left forefinger will be marked with indelible ink, and your serial number will be recorded in the electoral roll. Sign in the register or provide a thumb impression if unable to sign. You'll receive a signed voter's slip containing your serial number.

Stage 3: Voting:
Hand the voter's slip to the Third Polling Officer, who will activate the voting machine. Inside the voting compartment, press the blue candidate button against your preferred candidate's name and symbol. Press the button only once. A red lamp will glow beside the chosen candidate's name, accompanied by a beep sound confirming your vote. Repeat this process for other voters until the end of the poll.
