Congress A Bigger Enemy Than BJP: Assam MP Badruddin Ajmal

Ajmal, in an exclusive interview with ABP News, said that he was confident of another Lok Sabha win from Dhubri.

Often in the news for courting controversies, Assam's MP from the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat Maulana Badruddin Ajmal is looking at another term from the constituency. Ajmal is currently the lone MP from his party, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), and is hoping to retain the Dhubri seat that completed polling in the third phase on Tuesday with a turnout of 86.8%.

Ajmal, in an exclusive interview with ABP News, said that he was confident of another win from Dhubri. "Priyanka Gandhiji came, she did not live up to the expectations of the people. I shall win by a bigger margin than before," he said. He further said that for him, the Congress was a bigger opponent than the BJP.

Responding to a question on Raijor Dal MLA from Sibsagar Akhil Gogoi calling him "traitors to Muslims", Ajmal said: "I leave it on Muslims to decide... I am a religious and a political leader. People clapped and laughed when he called me gaddar [traitor]. But after that, I changed my strategy. I did not attack him. He abused the whole community. If he has abused me, it means everyone sitting there was abused. He must be replied through ballots."

He, however, dismissed any notion of him demanding votes in the name of religion. He said: "We are asking for votes based on our work. Congress does not have any agenda. Congress couldn't make an issue out of anything — be it poverty, unemployment, temples, or black money. The only issue they had was focusing on removing Ajmal from Dhubri."

Speaking on Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma's repeated attacks on him, he said it was only natural that he would speak the BJP's language. "He is sitting on the CM's chair with the blessings of Modiji. He is doing what Amit Shah and Yogi Adityanath are doing. As long as he wants to remain on the CM's throne, he will have to attack me. There is nothing to feel bad about it."

"They are scared that if I emerge at the national level, I may inflict a lot of damage to the BJP. That's why I am being gheraoed by Congress candidates who were once affiliated with the BJP," Ajmal told ABP News. Training his gun on his Congress Opponent from Dhubri Rakibul Hussain, Ajmal said: "He is Himanta Sharma's biggest friend. Just 15 days ago, he said that the CM is his friend." He further said that the Congress was a bigger enemy than the BJP for the AIUDF.
