AIADMK To Hold Second Round Of Seat-Sharing Discussions With DMDK

DMDK General Secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth and Deputy Secretary LK Sudheesh are slated to participate in the meeting with AIADMK leaders.

AIADMK, the principal Opposition party of Tamil Nadu, is set to hold a meeting with DMDK to discuss seat-sharing for the second time for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections 2024. AIADMK leaders SP Velumani and Thangamani are expected to hold talks with DMDK leaders on Wednesday.

DMDK General Secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth and Deputy Secretary LK Sudheesh are slated to participate in the meeting.

The DMDK, founded by the late Tamil cinema icon Vijayakanth, is now led by his wife Premalatha and his brother-in-law LK Sudheesh, following his demise due to prolonged ill-health on December 28, 2023. In the 2011 state Assembly elections, the party, in alliance with the AIADMK, won 29 seats and garnered 7.9% of the total vote share.

As AIADMK seeks to broaden its coalition it recently formed an alliance with the Dalit-focused Puthiya Tamilagam party, led by Dr Krishnaswamy, on Monday.

Negotiations between DMDK and AIADMK for the upcoming elections have seen the DMDK pushing for 4 Lok Sabha seats, whereas the AIADMK is proposing to allocate only two seats to them, as per sources within the DMDK.

Last month, DMDK workers passed a resolution to make Vijayakanth's son Vijaya Prabhakaran contest from Virudhunagar constituency.

AIADMK is also looking to sealing an alliance with PMK soon. PM is set to get one Rajya Sabha seat while seven Lok Sabha seats including Dharmapuri for PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss, a report on Times of India said, quoting sources.

AIADMK also called VCK, a Dalit party in Tamil Nadu, for an alliance but the party said that it was committed to retaining the alliance with DMK and I.N.D.I.A bloc.

During the 2006 Assembly elections, the VCK, aligning with the AIADMK-led coalition, secured victories in two out of the nine seats it contested.
