Schools Reopening: There is a significant decline in the number of Covid-19 cases every day. In such a situation, with the relaxation of lockdown restrictions in many states, it has been decided to reopen schools and other educational institutions. States like Haryana, Telangana, Gujarat have allowed physical offline classes in schools following strict Covid-19 protocols. Other states are considering the need for offline classes citing the potential threat of a third wave of Covid-19.
Recently, the Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal said, “there is every possibility of the third wave of Covid-19 wreaking havoc, so we cannot risk the lives of children till the vaccination process is completed for everyone. However, many states have announced the reopening of schools for higher classes in late July or August. Let's take a look at the states that are going to open schools again.

- Punjab
On July 20, the Punjab government had announced that schools from class 10 to class 12 would be reopened in the state from July 26. During a Covid review meeting, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said that schools have been allowed to reopen for classes 10 to 12. However, only the fully immunized teachers and staff will be allowed to be present physically. The consent of the parents will be necessary for the attendance of the students in the schools. During this, the option of virtual classes will also continue.
- Madhya Pradesh
As the cases of Covid-19 have declined, the Madhya Pradesh government has also announced that the schools in the state will reopen with 50 percent capacity from July 26 for classes 11 and 12. Schools in junior classes will be allowed to reopen gradually depending on the situation. At the same time, classes for each batch of students will be conducted on alternate days. Under this, a batch of students will attend classes on the first day and the second on the next day.
- Chattisgarh
The Chhattisgarh government has decided on July 20 to reopen educational institutions from August 2. Classes for classes 10 and 12 will start from August 2, while colleges will reopen in a phased manner. Schools will be allowed to reopen with the consent of parents, gram panchayats of villages, and councilors of urban areas.
- West Bengal
A senior official said that the West Bengal government does not plan to reopen schools soon, as there is a threat of a third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. An education department official said that offline classes will first start for the students of higher classes once the schools reopen. At the primary level, a decision will be taken after assessing the situation. However, the top government officials will take a final decision about the reopening of schools.
- Andhra Pradesh
The state government started online classes on July 12, and physical classes will resume from August 16.
- Odisha
The state government has decided to reopen schools for classes 10 and 12 from July 26, although it is not mandatory for students to attend offline classes. During this, online teaching-learning will continue for the students. Satyabrata Sahu, Principal Secretary, School and Mass Education, Odisha, said, “We have been able to reach only 40% of the total students through online teaching, while 60% students are left behind. Due to the Covid-19 restrictions, students have lost 150 regular teaching days of their academic year. Therefore, from July 26, both private and government schools are being re-opened for the students of class 10 and 12." The classes will be conducted from 10.00 am to 1.30 pm. There will be no provision of half leave during this period.
Physical classes have been resumed for higher classes in states like Gujarat, Haryana, Maharashtra, and Bihar. However, during this time, the schools have been instructed to strictly follow the Covid-19 protocol.
