Loreto College Kolkata Apologises, Revokes Language Bar For Admissions Amid Outrage From Students

Apologising for the discriminatory admission policy, the Loreto College Kolkata has said thats it was an unintended error, and the college has revoked the policy.

The Loreto College Kolkata has repealed the policy that restricted students from schools which taught in Bengali and other languages, from taking admission in the undergraduate courses at the college. The move from the college administration comes following severe outrage from students. Recently, the college published its first merit list for admissions into its seven B.A and B.Sc Honours courses, in which it mentioned that students whose medium of instruction in class 12 is ‘vernacular’ have not been considered for admissions.

The restricting and discriminatory move from the college in undergraduate admissions stirred outrage among students and activists. A Bengali fringe outfit Bangla Pokkho also staged a protest outside the college against the issue. Calcutta University Registrar Debasis Das told PTI that the University does not allow its affiliated colleges to frame such discriminatory policies and make space biases based on the learning medium of a student. He further said that the college representatives have been summoned over the discriminatory move and the college has apologised saying that it has revoked the controversial admssion policy.

The recent admission policy notice does not reflect the values we cherish," it added.
