IIT Delhi Student Found Hanging In Hostel, Probe Underway

The M.Tech student from IIT was found hanging inside his room 757 at Dronagiri Hostel.

In an apparent case of suicide, an M.Tech student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi was found hanging in his hostel room on Friday, with the help of a bedsheet. The case came to light after Sanjay Nerkar’s family asked his friends to check on him as he was not answering his phone since Thursday night. 

Nerkar, 24, was a native of Nashik, Maharashtra and the son of Sanjay Kasi nath Nerkar, he stayed in room number 757 at Dronagiri Hostel.

"Nerkar's family members called him on Thursday night. When he did not answer the phone, the family members asked his hostel mates to check on him," a police officer told PTI.

The students found his room locked from the inside, concerned, they informed the hostel guard who then broke open the door. They saw Nerkar’s body hanging from the ceiling, PTI reported the police as saying.

Nerkar’s family members have been informed and an investigation has been launched to ascertain the cause of death.

The crime scene has been inspected by the investigative team, and further inquiry is in progress, exploring all possible angles.

Meanwhile, a similar incident occurred in Kota, Rajasthan, where student from Chhattisgarh, undergoing coaching for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), took his own life. Shubhkumar Chaudhary, aged 16, was discovered deceased on Monday, marking the fourth student suicide in Kota within the last 20 days.

According to officials, the student hanged himself on Monday night after the declaration of the JEE Mains results. He had been residing in Kota for the past two years while preparing for the exam. Chaudhary's parents attempted to contact him on Tuesday morning and received no response, they alerted the warden. Upon entering his room, they found him hanging from the fan.

Last month, a PhD scholar in IIT Kanpur allegedly died by suicide. The 29-year old student from Jharkhand’s Dumka was pursuing PhD in Chemical Engineering at the institute, and enrolled in the institute on December 29, 2023. The tragic incident is the third suicide case at IIT Kanpur campus within a month.
