ICSE Vs CBSE: Which Is better And Why?

ICSE and CBSE are two of India's most prominent education boards with similar subjects.

By Alka Kapur

Parents often face academic dilemmas when choosing between CBSE and ICSE, India's two most recognized boards of education. Both boards have distinct features, such as the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Parents must be aware of the admission process, their characteristics and differences to make an informed decision about their child's education.

An Inside Overview

ICSE and CBSE are two of India's most prominent education boards with similar subjects. ICSE, managed by the Council of Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE), is a prestigious and comprehensive board that conducts the ICSE examination at the end of the 10th class. Its syllabus is more intricate than CBSE, making the 10th and 12th board exams the toughest.

CBSE, on the other hand, is a primary board that follows the national curriculum and conducts national-level exams for admissions to engineering and medical courses at the undergraduate level. Approved by the National Council of Education and Research Training, it conducts two sets of examinations - the All India Secondary School Examination (AISSE) and the All India Senior School Certificate Examination (AISSCE).

CBSE and ICSE have different curricula, with CBSE focusing on science and mathematics and ICSE focusing on languages, arts, and science.

Comparing the two boards requires an in-depth analysis of various aspects, as there is no one-size-fits-all approach.

Pedagogy And Syllabus

The CBSE syllabus is structured and controlled, focusing on mathematics and science for competitive entrance exams in India. It is suitable for students aiming for national-level engineering and medical entrance exams like JEE and NEET. CBSE's flexible curriculum allows students to choose from various elective subjects in higher classes. ICSE, on the other hand, has a more detailed syllabus covering a vast array of subjects with similar importance given to languages, arts, and sciences.

It is particularly known for its rigorous English language training, which is considered of higher standard than other Indian boards. Despite its detailed curriculum, ICSE is sometimes perceived as more challenging and broad-based than CBSE.

Examination And Evaluation Comparison

CBSE exams are straightforward, focusing on curriculum and direct application of concepts, while ICSE exams are more thorough and require a solid understanding of concepts and clear thought. CBSE follows a standardized examination pattern, with two main exams: AISSE at the end of class 10 and AISSCE at the end of class 12.

The exams are a mix of objective and subjective questions, with a recent shift towards competency-based questions. ICSE exams are known for their comprehensive nature, testing students' knowledge, understanding, and ability to express themselves clearly.

Competitive Advantage

CBSE is a popular choice for students preparing for competitive exams like JEE and NEET due to the closely aligned syllabus with the CBSE curriculum. This makes preparation easier for CBSE students who are already familiar with the concepts and topics tested in these exams. ICSE, on the other hand, provides a strong foundation in English but may require extra effort to cover topics not included in the school syllabus.

In A Nutshell

Based on differences in terms of syllabus, exam format, and competency level, CBSE focuses on building a strong foundation for competitive exams like IIT JEE and NEET, with a structured syllabus that is easy to grasp. ICSE, on the other hand, emphasizes the in-depth study of subjects, with an equal focus on proficiency in the English language.
