Delhi JNU To Establish Centres For Hindu, Buddhist, And Jain Studies
Delhi JNU: According to an official notification, three new centres for Hindu studies, Buddhist studies, and Jain studies will be established under the School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies.
Delhi JNU: The Jawaharlal Nehru University, JNU will establish centres for Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain studies. According to the official notification, three new centres will be established under the School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies. These centres aim to promote the study of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain traditions, adding to JNU’s diverse academic offerings. The decision to set up the new centres was approved by the Executive Council of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in a meeting on May 29, 2024. As reported by PTI, JNU had set up a committee to investigate how to implement the National Education Policy and the Indian Knowledge System in the university. In the meeting, the Executive Council approved the committee's recommendations, including creating new centres within the School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies.

An official notification released on July 9 confirmed this development. The decision follows recommendations from a committee set up to explore the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the Indian Knowledge System at the Jawaharlal Nehru university.
“The Executive Council in its meeting held on 29.05.2024 has approved the recommendation of the committee constituted to explore and recommend on NEP-2020 and Indian Knowledge System and its further implementation in the University, and establishing of following centres within the School of Sanskrit and Indic Studies,” the official notification reads.

Last year, Delhi University (DU) established a Centre for Hindu Studies that currently offers a master's programme and plans to introduce UG courses. Delhi University already has a department for Buddhist Studies, and in March, it got the central government's nod to establish a Centre for Advanced Studies in Buddhism, at an estimated cost of Rs 35 crore.
