Cold Wave: Punjab Schools To Remain Closed Till January 21 For Classes Up To 5

While primary schools have been closed, all middle, high, and senior secondary schools in Punjab will be operating from 10:00 am to 03:00 pm.

Amid soaring drip in mercury levels across various parts of Northern India, the Punjab government has decided to close all schools in the state till January 21, for classes up to 5. Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains on Sunday, took to X, to make the announcement. As per the announcement, while primary schools in the state shall remain closed till January 21, all middle, high and senior secondary schools in the state will have regular physical learning from 10:00 am to 03:00 pm. 

“According to the guidelines of Bhagwant Singh Maan ji, Hon'ble Chief Minister Punjab, due to the severe cold in the state, and in view of the health and safety of the students, all the primary schools of the state up to the fifth class (Government/Aided/Recognized and Private) will remain closed  from January 15 to January 21, 2024,” Harjot Singh Bains tweeted. 

“All Middle, High and Senior Secondary Schools (Government/Aided/Recognised and Private) of the state will have regular sessions from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm from tomorrow. All double shift schools will have timings from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. No double shift school shall open after 4:00 p.m,” he added further.

The move from the Punjab government comes as a bid to safeguard and protect young school going children from being exposed to the harsh winter breeze. In a similar move, the Chandigarh Education Department on Sunday, also announced the closure of all schools in the union territory till January 20, 2024, for classes up to 8th. 

An official order released by the DoE Chandigarh states that schools may conduct classes in the online mode in the meantime, to keep up with the academic curriculum. However, for classes 9 to 12, the shall continue in the offline physical mode but with a restricting operational timing. The official order directs all schools in Chandigarh to not operate before 09:30 am, and after 04:00 pm.
