Cold Wave: Chandigarh Schools To Remain Closed Till January 20 For Classes Up To 8th

As per an official order, Chandigarh schools will continue with physical learning mode for classes 9 to 12, but they must not operate before 09:30 am, and not after 04:00 pm.

The Department of Education (DoE), Chandigarh has directed all schools in the Union Territory to remain closed January 20, 2024, for classes up to 8th standard. An official order released by the DoE Chandigarh states that schools may conduct classes in the online mode in the meantime, to keep up with the academic curriculum. However, for classes 9 to 12, the shall continue in the offline physical mode but with a restricting operational timing. The official order directs all schools in Chandigarh to not operate before 09:30 am, and after 04:00 pm. 

“In view of the prevailing inclement weather conditions and to avoid the exposure of children to this extreme cold weather; there will be no classes in physical mode up to Class VIII in any Government, Government-Aided and Recognised Private Schools of UT Chandigarh till the 20*h of January 2024. The schools may organise online classes for their students of these classes,” reads the official order. 

“For Class IX to XII in all Government, Government-Aided and Recognised Private Schools of UT Chandigarh, till the 20*h of January 2024 the schools shall open for students not earlier than 9.30 am and close no later than 4 pm. The Schools while regulating the timing for these classes must take into account the cold spell especially early morning and late evening and the time taken by the children for their commute to and from school. The Schools may regulate the timings for their staff accordingly and must inform all concerned,” the order reads further.

Notably, the move from the Chandigarh education department comes as a precautionary bid to safeguard school going children from being exposed to the intense cold wave. Earlier today, while MCD and Delhi schools were directed by respective authorities in Delhi to resume physical classes from January 15, they have also been asked to strictly adhere to the prescribed precautionary operational timings: not before 09.00 am, and not after 05:00 pm.
