Career Guidance | Commerce students confused what to choose after class 12? Check options
Students who choose the Commerce stream after class 10th must evaluate their career goal to choose the right mix of subjects and after class 12th they must enrol into bachelor’s degree courses that are in sync with their career paths.
Career Guidance: From building a career in management or marketing, to being a professional Chartered Accountant or Lawyer, or working in a corporate to being a part of the cabin crew, there’s simply no dearth of career options for Commerce students after class 12th. Students who choose the Commerce stream after class 10th must evaluate their career goal to choose the right mix of subjects and after class 12th they must enrol into bachelor’s degree courses that are in sync with their career paths.
MBA: For students who are confident, outspoken and possess good communication skills, and for whom MBA is the future academic goal, such students can opt for Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) to hone their skills early on. Alternatively, Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) is yet another option for commerce students who’ve made up their mind to pursue MBA.
Accountancy: For the ones who are bang on in their accounting skills and can manage long & strenuous sitting that goes in the preparation for Chartered Accountancy exams, CA is the holy grail of every commerce student. Such students must opt in for ICAI CA programmes right after Class 12th and pursue B.Com i.e. Bachelor of Commerce; or they can enrol in Bachelor of Finance and Accounting (BAF) to keep the focus on accounting and taxation practices . Similarly, CS aka Company Secretary is the option for those who have an interest in handling the financial and legal affairs of companies.
Law: Students who have set their eyes on becoming a lawyer and wish to appear for Judicial Services in due course of time, can enrol in B.Com. L.L.B. (Combination of Bachelor of Commerce and Law programme) or pursue LL.B. aka Legum Baccalaureus or Bachelor of Law post their graduation.
Finance: Apart from these general options, students can also explore new vistas by undergoing various certifications like Certified Management Accountants (CMA), Business Accounting and Taxation (BAT), and Business Accounting and Taxation, etc that can break open job roles like Financial Analyst, Finance manager, etc and later pave way to larger roles like Chief Financial Officer (CFO), etc.
Hotel Management: Bachelor of Hotel Management (BHM) is yet another interesting career option available for Commerce students after class 12th. BHM grads get hired as hotel managers and restaurant managers to chase a career in the hotel industry. Graduates can also apply for the roles of air hostesses or flight stewards and enjoy a travel-bound career.
IT: Students who plan to move into the Computer and Information Technology field after Class 12th, can pick Bachelor of Computer Applications and get hands-on with computer science to carve a career in IT and ITeS.
Banking: A career in BFSI (Banking Financial Services and Insurance) can be pursued right after graduation. Students can prepare for Bank PO exams, or move into the Stock Market as Financial Interns and learn the tricks of the trade while on job. Candidates with outgoing personalities can work as Relationship Managers (RM) in customer facing roles, besides exploring opportunities in BPOs and KPOs.
Higher education: For students who wish to support their higher education themselves, short courses like Tally ERP 9, SAP, etc make a good choice as they lend a professional certificate that can easily land a job for the candidate.
