Delhi: Congress Youth Wing Stages Protest Against I-T Dept's Notice To Pay Rs 1823 Cr — WATCH

Youth Congress workers staged a protest in Delhi against the centre after the party called for nationwide protests after it received notices from the I-T Department to pay Rs 1,823 crore.

The Youth Congress workers on Saturday held a protest in the national capital after the grand old party received fresh notices from the Income Tax department to pay around Rs 1823 crores. The protest was held against the central government, whom the Congress on Friday accused of undermining the democracy by resorting to "tax terrorism."

The development came in after the Congress party announced on Friday that it would hold nationwide protests against the PM Modi-led government today. The party called it an "egregious attack" and decided to protest after it was slapped with fresh notices by the I-T department. Earlier, the party also claimed that their accounts were frozen, leaving them with no resources to undertake campaigning for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal wrote a letter to all the PCC Presidents, CLP Leaders, General Secretaries or In-charges, and heads of frontal organisations, requesting them to hold massive protests at the district and state headquarters on March 30-31.

Congress party is seeking to take legal recourse against these alleged improprieties with support from other opposition parties.

Congress treasurer Ajay Maken stated that the party has analysed all the submissions of the saffron party to the Election Commission and stated that BJP has faltered every year. Maken also hinted that the party might fight a public interest litigation against the perceived favouritism of tax authorities towards the BJP.

While accusing the BJP of misusing the probe agencies for "tax terrorism," Congress leader Rahul Gandhi warned of consequences that would follow when the government changes in the future. He also pledged to take exemplary action against these practices if Congress came to power at the Centre.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh trained guns at the BJP, highlighting the party's involvement in the electoral bonds scam, amounting to Rs 8,200 crore. He also stated that the apex court will soon hear Congress's plea on the demands made by the I-T department.

The case is scheduled to be heard at the Supreme Court on April 1 (Monday).
