Slapped By Rs 1823 Cr I-T Notices, Congress To Hold Nationwide Protests Against 'Tax Terrorism' Today
Calling it an "egregious attack" on democracy, the grand old party had announced on Friday that it would stage protests against the PM Modi-led government on Saturday.
A day after the Congress party revealed to have received fresh notices from the Income Tax department to pay around Rs 1823 crore, the grand old party is all set to hold nationwide protests against the PM Modi-led government on Saturday. Calling it an "egregious attack" on democracy, the grand old party had announced on Friday that it would stage protests against the opposition. Earlier, on Friday, the Congress party also accused the ruling BJP of resorting to "tax terrorism" in order to undermine the democracy.
In a letter written by Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal to all the PCC Presidents, CLP Leaders, General Secretaries pr In-charges and heads of frontal organisations, the party requested all the leaders to hold massive public demonstrations at the state and district headquarters in their respective states on Saturday and Sunday.
"In light of this egregious attack on democracy and the imposition of tax terrorism on our party amidst the crucial Lok Sabha Elections, all PCCs are requested to hold massive public demonstrations at the State and District headquarters in their respective states tomorrow and the following day," Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal wrote in the statement.

The Congress is seeking legal recourse against these alleged improprieties , along with other opposition parties. Congress treasurer Ajay Maken, asserted: "We have analysed all the submissions of the BJP to the Election Commission... The party has faltered every year." He also hinted at contemplating filing a public interest litigation (PIL) against the perceived favouritism of tax authorities towards the BJP.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also accused the BJP of misusing probe agencies for "tax terrorism" and also warned of consequences that would follow once the government changes. The Congress leader vowed to take exemplary action against these practices if the party comes to power at the Centre.
Jairam Ramesh, Congress general secretary, further criticised the BJP's alleged involvement in the electoral bonds scam, amounting to Rs 8,200 crore. He stated that the Supreme Court will soon hear Congress's plea on the I-T department's demands from it. The case is scheduled to be heard on April 1.
