CBI Rules Out Gang Rape In RG Kar Case, Says Probing 'Larger Conspiracy'
The CBI informed the Calcutta High Court that it has ruled out gangrape in the RG Kar rape-murder case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday submitted in the Calcutta High Court that it has ruled out gangrape in the RG Kar rape-murder case and informed that it was the act of a single perpetrator.
The Calcutta High Court had questioned the central investigation agency during the prior hearing on whether Sanjay Roy was the only criminal or if there were other people involved in the crime.
On behalf of the CBI, Deputy Solicitor General Rajdeep Majumdar said that all of the DNA samples from the crime scene that were available underwent forensic analysis. A 14-member medical board that included physicians examined the case. But no forensic evidence proved a case of gang rape, and DNA analysis only verified Sanjay Roy, the guilty accused, was involved.
What CBI Counsel Said?
“All forensic opinion has been taken. All available DNA at the scene of the crime was examined. That was sent to the forensic experts... A medical board of 14 doctors was formed from different parts of the country, including gynaecologists, orthopaedics, general surgeons, DNA experts, and other experts... We have investigated everything; all nurses, all doctors, all persons associated with the hospital have been examined...all aspects have been covered by the investigating agency,” the CBI counsel said.
The CBI lawyer told the high court that the agency was now looking into any "larger conspiracy" and evidence destruction, and that daily investigations were being carried out.
In response to a question about how long the inquiry will take, the CBI counsel stated that the agency is unable to provide a completion timeline because several individuals are being questioned.
A 31-year-old female postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered in a seminar room on RG Kar Medical College campus on August 9, 2024. The Additional District and Sessions Court in Sealdah found Sanjay Roy guilty on January 18 of the doctor's rape and murder, and on January 20, the former civic police volunteer was given a life sentence.
