Meet Ramkeval, The First Boy From His UP Village To Clear Class 10 Exam Since Independence

Ramkeval, 15, used to carry lights at wedding processions to earn money for the family. His mother cooks food in a school while his father works as a labourer.

At a time when academic competition is intense with every student trying to score at least 90 per cent and above, a village near Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow erupted in celebration as Ramkeval became first boy to pass class 10 since Independence.

The 15-year-old boy hails from Nizampur village, 30 kilometres from Lucknow and belongs to the Dalit community, reported The Times of India. He was a student at the Government Inter College in Ahmedpur near Nizampur.

The eldest brother of four siblings, he did odd jobs during the day to earn bread and butter and studied at night to prepare for the exams. He said that he used to carry lights in wedding processions and earned Rs 250 to Rs 300 per day.

Ramkeval, along with his parents, was honoured by Barabanki district magistrate Shashank Tripathi on Sunday. The DM also assured the boy of all the help in his studies.

'Used To Carry Lights'

Ramkeval's comes from a modest family where his mother cooks food in a school while his father works as a labourer to support the family. "I used to carry lights in wedding processions and earned Rs 250 to 300 per day to support them," he told TOI.

Despite running late, he said, he would ensure studying for at least two hours under a solar lamp at home. "Some people in the village used to mock me, saying I would never pass high school. But I always believed I would prove them wrong, he said.

Despite, Ramkeval's family's struggle to make both ends meet, his other three siblings are enrolled in school. One is in class nine, another in five, and the youngest in class 1, as per the report.

Ramekeval's success has inspired Lovelesh and Mukesh from his village, who failed to pass the exam this year, to renew their resolve to study harder.
