‘Beaten Up By Congress Govt In Assam, Had Jail Food For 7 Days’: Home Minister Amit Shah In Golaghat

At the inaugural ceremony of Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, Amit Shah also lashed out at the Congress, alleging that the party did not allow peace in Assam.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday claimed that he was beaten and had to eat jail's food for seven days under the Congress-led government in the state. He highlighted this remark by recalling his detention during Hiteshwar Saikia's tenure as Assam Chief Minister.

While speaking at the inaugural ceremony of Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Golaghat's Dergaon, Amit Shah lashed out at the Congress and alleged that the party did not allow peace in Assam.

"I have also been beaten up by the Congress government in Assam. Hiteshwar Saikia was the Chief Minister of Assam and we used to raise slogans against former PM Indira Gandhi that 'Assam ki gaaliyan suni hai, Indira Gandhi khooni hai'. I too had jail food for seven days in Assam and people from all over the country came to save Assam. Today Assam is moving ahead on the path of development," Shah said, news agency ANI reported.

Hiteshwar Saikia was Assam's Chief Minister from 1983 to 1985 and again from 1991 to 1996. Shah also expressed confidence that the newly inaugurated Lachit Barphukan Police Academy would emerge as the nation's best in the next five years.

"In the coming five years, the police academy will become the best police academy in the whole country. I thank Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for naming it after Lachit Barphukan. Brave warrior Lachit Barphukan helped Assam to be victorious against the Mughals. Lachit Barphukan was limited to the state of Assam only, but today the biography of Lachit Barphukan is being taught in 23 languages and is inspiring students," he added.

Lachit Barphukan Police Academy To Feature A Weapon Simulator

Shah further noted that the conviction rate in Assam has increased from 5 per cent to 25 per cent in three years and is likely to cross the national average soon. "Modi government to bring in Rs 3 lakh crore infra projects in Assam in addition to Rs 5 lakh crore proposed investment at recent biz summit," he said.

Amit Shah inaugurated the first phase of the newly upgraded police academy named after Lachit Barphukan in the Golaghat district of Assam. He was joined by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and other dignitaries.

Highlighting the initiative, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for SMART policing, the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy will feature a weapon simulator. This facility aims to equip security personnel with real-world combat training while minimizing risks and costs.

Amit Shah arrived in Dergaon on Friday evening as part of his three-day visit to Assam and Mizoram. During his tour, he will attend the closing session of the 57th Annual Conference of the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) in Kokrajhar on March 16. The ABSU conference, held in the Bodofa Fwthar area of Kokrajhar district, runs from March 13 to 16.
