Sonia Gandhi Hospitalised In Delhi For Stomach-Related Issue, Under Observation

Sonia Gandhi was hospitalised in Delhi for a stomach issue, her second admission to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for similar problems this year. Earlier, she underwent an MRI in Shimla.

Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has been hospitalised at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi for a stomach-related issue, according to a statement issued by the hospital on Sunday. She is currently admitted under the care of the gastroenterology department and remains under observation, news agency ANI reported.

Earlier this month, Gandhi, 78, had undergone an MRI scan at the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) Hospital in Shimla after experiencing restlessness. A party leader said she was rushed to the hospital from her private residence in Chharabra, Shimla, in the late afternoon, news agency IANS reported.

A doctor at IGMC said her blood pressure was “marginally higher than normal”, but confirmed that she was “normal and stable”. Naresh Chauhan, principal advisor (media) to Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, said she was taken for a routine check-up due to “some minor health issues”.

After learning about Gandhi’s condition, Chief Minister Sukhu reportedly curtailed his visit to Una and headed to Shimla, a Congress leader said, as per IANS.

Her residence in Shimla is located in Chharabra, near the Rashtrapati Niwas ‘The Retreat’, and features a unique blend of colonial and local architectural styles with distinctive grey slate roofs.

Sonia Gandhi's Prior Hospitalisations

A few months earlier too, Sonia Gandhi had admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi for a stomach-related problem. That time, during a February visit, she was kept under observation for a day by a gastroenterology specialist.

In September 2022, Gandhi had travelled to the United States for a medical consultation, which had earlier been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She was accompanied by her son and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi during the visit. Her trip led to her missing a large portion of the Monsoon Session of Parliament that year.

Just before departing for the US, Sonia Gandhi had directed a significant organisational revamp within the Congress party. Congress leader Randeep Surjewala had confirmed her departure and tweeted, thanking “everyone for their concern and good wishes”.
