SM Krishna Passes Away: Karnataka Schools & Colleges To Remain Closed On Wednesday
SM Krishna who served as the former CM of Karnataka from October 1999 to May 2004 passed away due to prolonged illness at his residence in the wee hours of Tuesday.
Karnataka government declared a holiday on Wednesday for government offices, schools, colleges and aided institutions to mourn the demise of former Chief Minister SM Krishna. The state has also announced a three-day mourning period from Tuesday (December 10).
Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna who served as the former CM of Karnataka from October 1999 to May 2004 passed away due to prolonged illness at his residence in the wee hours of Tuesday. Fondly known as SM Krishna, the leader is known for making Bengaluru the Silicon Valley of India.
A release from Karnataka government said, "The Karnataka State Government deeply mourns the passing of former Chief Minister and Union Minister Shri S.M. Krishna, who passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at 2:30 AM. As a mark of respect, the cremation will take place on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, in his native Mandya district, with full state honours. The government has declared a three-day mourning period from December 10 to December 12, 2024."
The release said that during the mourning period, all public entertainment programs will be suspended, and the national flag will be flown at half-mast on state government buildings.
On the demise of former Karnataka CM SM Krishna, CM Siddaramaiah said, "With his demise, the state has lost a stalwart leader. I will pray to God that his family and supporters get the strength to bear this grief, and may his soul rest in peace. I met him two months ago when he was undergoing treatment in the hospital. A government holiday has been declared tomorrow in the state and there will be three days of mourning. I will attend the last rites tomorrow."
Meanwhile, in Bengaluru, the public will be allowed to pay their last respect to the leader at his residence till 8 AM on Wednesday. The final rites are scheduled to take place at 4 PM at his native residence in Maddur.
