RG Kar Case Trial: Bengal Guv Seeks Report From Mamata After Accused Sanjay Roy Claims Ex-Top Cop's Involvement

The trial in the rape and murder case of the trainee doctor commenced on Monday, November 11, three months after the incident took place at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

R G Kar Rape and Murder Case Trial: West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose on Tuesday sought an immediate report from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, a day after key accused Sanjay Roy alleged that he was framed by senior police officers including former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. He has asked the state government to apprise him about its stand on the allegations at the earliest.

The trial in the rape and murder case of the trainee doctor commenced on Monday, November 11, three months after the incident took place at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

The proceedings were held in front of the camera at the Sealdah court before additional district and sessions judge Anirban Das. However, after the trial, the prime accused Roy stated outside the court that he was framed by the police officers.

"In the light of disturbing news carried by the media on 12.11.2024 in connection with the R. G. Kar alleged rape and murder case, where the key accused Sanjay Roy, after the proceedings in the Sealdah Court on 11.11.2024, has reportedly alleged that 'he was framed by senior police officers, including former Kolkata police commissioner Vineet Goyal’, HG has urged the State Government to look into the matter and inform him the factual position and the State Government’s stand on the allegations at the earliest," Raj Bhavan Media Cell stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Sanjay Roy claimed that he was framed by the administration and that he was not guilty.  "They did not let me speak even today. I’ve done nothing and have been framed," Roy told reporters outside the court while being taken away.

"Senior officers are involved in this. The government is backing them. They have been threatening me. I am giving you the names.  They are Vineet Goel and DC Special... They have conspired to frame me into this," Roy had said.

Roy had also claimed to be innocent when charges were framed against him on November 4. He was arrested on August 10, a day after the medic's body was found inside the state-run hospital's seminar room.

Roy has been booked under Section 64 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (rape), Section 66 (punishment for causing death or resulting in a persistent vegetative state) and 103 (punishment for murder).

As the incident sparked nationwide protests and outrage, the case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation on an order by the Calcutta High Court.
