'Nothing Will Happen, Stay In Class': Students Say Teacher Ignored Warnings Before Rajasthan School Collapse

A school roof collapse in Rajasthan's Jhalawar killed seven children and injured 28. Students reported warning teachers about falling stones minutes before the collapse, but were ignored.

Two students at the government school in Rajasthan's Jhalawar district, which collapsed on Friday, killing seven children and leaving 28 injured, have said that teachers ignored their warnings minutes before a portion of the roof collapsed.

The incident took place at around 7:45 AM today at the Piplodi Government School in Jhalwar just as the students were about to assemble for morning prayers.

"While we were sitting inside the classroom, stones started falling from the roof. Immediately, we informed our teacher, but what we said was ignored. Later, the roof collapsed," one of the students told news agency ANI.

Another student made the same claim and said that the teacher was eating poha when they told him that stones were falling from the roof. She said the teacher scolded them and dismissed their warning.

"We told the teacher something was wrong, but he said, nothing will happen, stay inside the class."

The students also claimed that they had raised the matter regarding the school building's condition with the authorities on various occasions, but no action was taken.

Nearly 35 children were burried under the slabs of concrete, bricks, and stones, with parents and teachers helping in the rescue effort, trying to pull out the children.

Nand Kishore Verma, SHO of the police station in Manoharthana, about 80 km from the Jhalawar district headquarters, told PTI that seven children have died so far. Out of them five have been identified.

Meanwhile, the injured were taken to the Jhalawar hospital and the Manoharthana health centre. Nine of the them are said to be critically injured and are in the Intensive Care Unit.

Earlier today, President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives in the school collapse, describing the incident as tragic and deeply saddening.
