Rajasthan on Saturday got a boost to women and child safety with additional Kalika units. At an event to commemorate the 300th birth anniversary of social reformer and former queen of Malwa, Ahilyabai Holkar, BJP president and Union Health Minister JP Nadda and CM Bhajanlal Sharma flagged off 150 Kalika Patrolling Units.

What Is The Kalika Patrolling Unit?

The creation of the Kalika Patrolling Units was part of a broader safety initiative introduced by the Bhajanlal Sharma-led state government last year. During the announcement in June 2024, state Finance Minister Diya Kumari stressed that these teams are a proactive step toward preventing crimes against women and children. The name, "Kalika", denotes Goddess Kali. 

This specialised initiative, led by the Rajasthan Police, aims to create a stronger sense of security in public spaces, particularly for women. The Kalika Unit was launched in December last year.

The initial rollout of the initiative included 250 all-women patrol teams, each made up of four officers. In Jaipur alone, 35 units had been rolled out. Each District Commissionerate received 10  Kalika Unit teams back then.

These patrol units are led by senior women officers and are highly mobile. Riding black scooters with matching helmets, the women constables and head constables move through public and high-traffic areas to prevent harassment and eve-teasing. In order to enable timely responses to distress calls, the initiative also includes a dedicated police control room and helpline number.

The Kalika officers wear custom-designed blue uniforms, topped off with a neon monogram on the back and coordinating caps. The bold look is intended to give the units both a professional appearance and high visibility, ensuring that citizens can easily identify and approach them when in need.

With Saturday's launch of 150 additional Kalika units, the total strength of the initiative is now 400 in the state. The government's initial plan was to scale up this number to 500 as soon as possible.
