Punjab: 25 Farmers Face Arrest Warrants Over 2022 PM Modi Security Breach In Ferozepur
Punjab News: Arrest warrants were issued for 25 farmers allegedly involved in a 2022 security breach during Prime Minister Modi's visit.

A court in Punjab's Ferozepur district has issued arrest warrants against 25 farmers in connection with the security breach that occurred during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state in 2022. The incident saw the Prime Minister’s convoy obstructed for over an hour, jeopardising his security.
The arrest warrants were issued by the Sessions Judge, Virinder Aggarwal, in relation to an FIR filed on January 6, 2022, under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS) and the National Highway Act, as per the order copy shared by news agency ANI.

The accused farmers were allegedly involved in blocking a flyover on January 5, 2022, disrupting the Prime Minister's planned visit to Hussainiwala to pay tribute to freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev, and to lay the foundation stone for a satellite centre of PGI Ferozepur.
The court’s order, dated January 14, 2025, dealt with a bail application filed by Kamaljeet Singh, a 37-year-old farmer from Ferozepur, who sought pre-arrest bail. His application was rejected by the court after it considered the seriousness of the allegations. The FIR accused the farmers of obstructing the public road and causing a security threat by stalling the Prime Minister's convoy. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Ferozepur's SP (Investigations) had been probing the case, which led to the identification of several individuals involved, including Kamaljeet Singh.
The case originally registered against "unknown persons" was expanded after further investigation, with offences under sections 307, 353, 341, 186, 149 of the IPC and Section 8-B of the National Highway Act being added. The SIT had previously failed to arrest 25 individuals, including Kamaljeet Singh, despite issuing arrest warrants through the Judicial Magistrate's Court.
Security Breach During PM Modi's 2022 Ferozepur Visit
The protest that led to the security breach was primarily organised by the Bharti Kisan Union (Krantikari) and the Krantikari Pendu Mazdoor Union. The farmers blocked the flyover near Piareana, preventing the Prime Minister's convoy from proceeding. As a result, PM Modi had to return to Bathinda airport and cut his visit short, returning to Delhi without attending any scheduled events. The protest occurred on a rainy day in Punjab, with the weather leading to poor turnout at the rally. Due to these adverse conditions, the Prime Minister had opted to travel by road from Bathinda airport rather than by helicopter.
