Mumbra Train Accident: 5 Commuters Hanging Out Of Trains Killed As Bags Collide

On June 9, an accident in Mumbra resulted in at least five deaths due to crowded local trains.

In a tragic incident during Monday morning rush hour, 10 passengers fell off a local train between Mumbra and Diva stations near Thane, resulting in at least five deaths. Several passengers were injured as well. The accident occurred around 9:20 AM on June 9, 2025, when a fast local train travelling from Kasara to CSMT (departed at 8:19 AM) was passing through the area.

Initially, the accident was thought to have occurred on the Pushpak Express. However, the situation was clarified later and the Pushpak Express was found to not have been involved in the accident.

According to railway officials, both trains involved were local and heading in opposite directions. Due to heavy overcrowding, several passengers were hanging by the doors, and their bags extended outside the train. As the two trains crossed paths, the bags collided, causing some passengers to lose balance and fall onto the tracks.

A witness recounted that the collision between passengers' bags led to people being thrown off both trains. In total, eight individuals reportedly fell onto the tracks during the incident.

Emergency services responded swiftly, with ambulances arriving by 9:50 AM. The injured were rushed to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, where they are receiving treatment.

Prominent public representatives, including MLA Sanjay Waghule, Disaster Management Officer Yasin Tadvi, and Medical Superintendent Dr. Malgaonkar, were present at the hospital to oversee the response. The Kalwa police inspector and a dedicated team of doctors are currently working on a war footing to treat the injured.

The incident underscores the dangers of overcrowding on Mumbai's local trains, especially during peak hours.

CPRO, Central Railway, Swapnil Dhanraj Nila, said, "There has been an incident where several people travelling on local trains from Mumbra to Diva fell down. The guard of a Kasara-bound local train reported this incident. These people have been rushed to the hospital for their treatment. This incident happened between Mumbra-Diva railway stations on the Down/Fast Line. People travelling on the footboard on a local train from Kasara and similarly those on a train going towards CSMT, collided with each other and fell."

Thirteen people have been injured, he said.

Nila further said, "The first information provided by the guard of the Kasara-bound local train was that six passengers were seen lying injured on the down-through track. Once the ambulances reached the spot, we found the other passengers. We have seen that sometimes passengers travel standing on the footboard even when there is space in the train. There is CCTV footage available on a route or a section."
