Fortnight After 2-Year-Old's Rape-Murder, Another Minor Raped in Mumbai

Mumbai minor's rape: A 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped in Mumbai’s Vikhroli after an intruder broke in through a window. The accused has been identified as Sameer Shaikh (31).

Mumbai, which has been hitting the headlines over the past few months for the sexual assault of minors, saw another teen being allegedly raped in the Vikhroli area. The accused, identified as Sameer Shaikh (31), allegedly broke into the girl's home through a window and overpowered her.

He then threatened the 17-year-old girl to keep quiet and raped her. Before leaving her home, Shaikh warned her that he would defame her if she spoke about the incident.

The Parksite Police Station registered a case against the accused under sections 64(2)(D) and 351(2) of the BNS, as well as the POSCO Act. Shaikh has since been arrested.

Describing the incident, the police said that the victim initially did not inform anyone about the incident out of fear. However, noticing changes in her behaviour, the girl's family questioned her, after which she disclosed the ordeal. The family then took her to the nearest police station and filed a complaint. The police immediately registered a case and launched an investigation.

Based on technical evidence and CCTV footage, the police arrested the accused from the Vikhroli area.

Two-Year-Old Raped Murdered In Mumbai

The Vikhroli incident came within two weeks of the alleged rape and murder of a two-year-old girl in the Malvani area of Mumbai. The toddler's life was cut short in her own home, allegedly at the hands of her mother's 19-year-old boyfriend, while her mother stood by and watched.

According to police, the 19-year-old accused expressed his disturbing intent to the child's mother, who ultimately permitted him to carry out the assault. As the child cried in agony, the teenager smothered her with a pillow, silencing her forever. His lover, who had been living with her own mother after a divorce, reportedly did not want to care for the child, who was born after her husband abandoned her during pregnancy.

When the horror ended, the mother rushed her unconscious daughter to a nearby government hospital. There, she tried to mislead doctors, claiming her daughter had suffered an epileptic seizure. However, the medical team quickly grew suspicious. The post-mortem revealed the child had died from asphyxia and had suffered severe internal injuries consistent with sexual assault.

Earlier this month, a 42-year-old man, who was acquitted in a 2017 murder case, was arrested for raping his teenaged daughter in Dharavi.
