Long Wait For Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway Is Over. Here’s When It Will Open to Traffic

The 701-km Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway will reduce travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur from 16 to 8 hours.

The much-awaited Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway is nearing full completion, with the final 76-kilometre stretch now ready for traffic. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has confirmed that the remaining portion of the 701-km expressway will be open to motorists by mid-March. This will mark a major milestone for one of Maharashtra’s most ambitious infrastructure projects.

The Expressway is officially named the 'Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg'. The highway will directly connect 14 districts — Bhandara, Yavatmal, Gondia, Parbhani, Chandrapur, Akola, Raigad, Beed, Hingoli, Gadchiroli, Jalgaon, Dhule, Palghar, and Nanded.

Seamless Connectivity Across Maharashtra

Currently, commuters can travel from Igatpuri, near Nashik, to Nagpur, covering a distance of 625 km. With the final leg now complete, the expressway will provide uninterrupted connectivity between Mumbai and Nagpur, dramatically cutting down travel time.

The project, which saw contributions from 16 different construction firms, is almost fully operational. According to various reports, only the connecting road — being constructed by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) — remains under development. That work is expected to wrap up by March 10, ensuring the entire route is ready for use.

Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway Tolls, Commute Time, Key Details

The Expressway passes through the following regions in this order: Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Shahapur, Igatpuri (Nashik), Sinnar, Kopargaon, Shirdi, Vaijapur, Aurangabad Caves, Shendra, Jalna, Sindkhed Raja, Mehkar, Malegaon Jehangir, Karanja, Dhamangaon, Pulgaon, Wardha, Seloo, Butibori Power Plant, and finally MIHAN SEZ (Nagpur).

As per real-estate and infrastructure website housing.com, there are a total of 26 toll booths on the Mumbai Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway. The highest toll (one-way) for the entire 701 km is Rs 1,212 for private cars and the highest is Rs 7,830 for oversized vehicles. For commercial cars, the toll is Rs 1,955.

The Samruddhi Mahamarg will cut the travel time to Navi Mumbai International Airport to around 2 hours and the time taken to reach Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport from the current 4.5 hours to 2.5 hours.

Once fully operational, the Samruddhi Expressway will slash the travel time between Mumbai and Nagpur from a grueling 16-hour journey to just eight hours. The expressway will cut commute time between Mumbai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and the upcoming Nagpur-Multimodal International Airport. This is expected to boost trade and logistics in the region.

Project Delays And Timeline Adjustments

The expressway was partially opened in phases, with the first major section — 520 km from Nagpur to Shirdi — being inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 11, 2022. The second phase, covering a 105-km stretch from Shirdi to Bharvir, was launched by then-Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on May 23, 2023. Another 25-km section between Bharvir and Igatpuri opened to the public on March 4, 2024, without a formal inaugural event.

While officials had originally aimed to open the final 76-km portion between Igatpuri and Amane by November-December 2024, political transitions delayed the process. Instead of a phased launch, MSRDC opted to complete all pending work and open the entire stretch at once. The primary roadwork is done, with only minor finishing touches — such as tree plantations and crash barrier installations — remaining, all of which will be wrapped up by mid-March.
