A mob of 1,500 people in Jasdan taluka of Gujarat's Rajkot district clashed with police after their refusal to publicly parade 6 murders accused through the Vinchhiya village. In response, Rural Police fired 10 tear gas shells and carried out a lathi charge against the mob on Monday.
According to a report by Indian Express, SP Himkar Singh stated that a total of 52 people have been put into custody and are likely to be booked for rioting and under other charges.
The incident took place when local police escorted six suspects in custody to the crime scene for a reconstruction of a murder. The victim had filed a land-grabbing complaint against the accused, leading to his brutal killing.
Officials revealed that the original FIR, filed about a week ago, named four individuals. However, during the investigation, police identified eight suspects in total, of whom six, including the prime accused, were arrested.
Vinchhiya Police Brought Six Accused To Crime Site
As part of the investigation, Vinchhiya police brought the six accused to the crime site on Monday morning. A crowd of approximately 1,500 villagers, including the victim’s relatives, gathered near the police station, allegedly demanding that the accused be paraded publicly around the village.
“However, since parading the accused is an unlawful act, we absolutely refused to conduct any such procession,” stated SP Singh. While the police attempted to negotiate with the crowd, tensions escalated, and some individuals began throwing stones at the police. “Hence, we took action to disperse the crowd. We fired 10 tear gas shells and carried out a mild lathi charge. The situation is now stable,” the officer said.
