16-Year-Old JEE Aspirant Dies By Suicide In Kota Days Before Exam, Fourth Case This Month

Kota News: A 16-year-old JEE aspirant, Manan Jain, has taken his own life days before the January 22 exam. This marks the fourth student suicide in the coaching hub this year.

Kota News: A 16-year-old Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) aspirant allegedly hanged himself at his maternal grandparents' house in Kota, marking the fourth student suicide in the coaching hub this year, police said on Saturday. The incident occurred less than 48 hours after another aspirant from Odisha ended his life in his hostel room.

According to officials, no suicide note was recovered from the room. The deceased, identified as Manan Jain, was a Class 12 student from Indergarh town in Bundi district and had been living in Kota for the past three years to prepare for the JEE, news agency PTI reported.

Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Jawahar Singh said police received information about the incident around 9:15 am on Saturday. Manan had been studying with his cousin until midnight on Friday. When he did not respond to calls the following morning, his cousin looked into the room and found him hanging from the iron railing of the window.

"No suicide note was found, and the reason behind the suicide is yet to be ascertained," ASI Singh said, as quoted by PTI.

Manan’s family refused to have a post-mortem conducted but chose to donate his eyes before taking possession of the body, the ASI added. His maternal uncle, Mahaveer Jain, described him as a "brilliant student" who was scheduled to appear for the JEE-Main exam on January 22.

Meanwhile, the body of 18-year-old Abhijeet Giri, who also hanged himself on Thursday, was handed over to his family after a post-mortem. Initially reported as a NEET aspirant, Abhijeet was confirmed to be a JEE aspirant by his elder brother, Bipin Giri, as per PTI.

Abhijeet, a resident of Mayurbhanj district in Odisha, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room in Ambedkar Colony, Vigyan Nagar, on January 16.

Bipin said his brother had scored 93-94 per cent in Class 10 and was a diligent student who attended his coaching classes regularly. He last spoke to him on Wednesday evening, during which Abhijeet told him he would return home next month after his exam.

Rising Concern Over Student Suicides In Kota

Kota, known for its intensive coaching culture, has witnessed a worrying number of student suicides. In 2024 alone, 17 students have ended their lives.

On January 8, a 20-year-old JEE aspirant, Abhishek, allegedly hanged himself in his PG room. A native of Madhya Pradesh, he had been preparing for the entrance exam at a coaching institute since May 2024.

A day earlier, on January 7, another JEE aspirant, Neeraj, from Haryana, was found hanging from the hook of a ceiling fan in his hostel room.

The rising number of student suicides in Kota has raised serious concerns over the immense academic pressure and mental health challenges faced by aspirants in the city.
