Drunk TV Director Crashes Car In Kolkata Market, 1 Killed; Arrested

One individual died and eight were injured in Kolkata after a seemingly intoxicated driver crashed into a market.

One person was killed while eight others were injured after a car, reportedly being driven drunk, crashed at a market in Kolkata's Thakurpur area. Siddhant Das (35), a television director has been arrested by the police and took a woman co-passenger into custody. 

Another woman, who was in the rear seat, fled the spot after the crash. 

According to local media reports, the incident took place at around 9 am on Sunday. Das was driving back from Bakrahat in South 24 Parganas to Gariahat in south Kolkata, according to police.

Das and the two women were returning from a party when he lost control of the car and drove into a road closed for renovation. The car crashed through the rails and hit three two-wheelers and pedestrians. 

Police confirmed that Das was driving under the influence and four bottles of liquor were found in the vehicle. After the crash, he allegedly tried to flee the spot, but locals stopped the vehicle, pulled him out and thrashed him. 

1 Killed, Another Critical 

Aminur Rahman (63), a vegetable seller at the market, was rushed to hospital with critical injuries but later succumbed to it. Six of the eight injured people have been discharged while Joyded Majumdar's condition is serious, according to reports.

"I was standing on the road outside the market. Suddenly, I saw the car. It hit at least seven people, including a person on a scooter and two others on bikes," Manzoor Rahman, Aminur's nephew, told The Times of India.

According to a police officer, the road is being repaired and it is closed to traffic. Only vehicles belonging to residents are allowed here. The car crashed through the guard rails and drove recklessly, hitting several people.
