‘Found Out About Campus Rape From News’: Kolkata Law College Vice Principal

Kolkata law college shaken as ex-student, now temp faculty, among 4 arrested in alleged June 25 sexual assault case. VP says college found out from media, not police or staff.

The Vice Principal of South Calcutta Law College has revealed that the college administration first learned of the alleged gang-rape of a 24-year-old woman on campus not through official channels, but through media reports. The disturbing incident, which reportedly occurred on the night of June 25, has sent shockwaves through the city.

Vice Principal Nayana Chatterjee said the college was not informed by the police at the outset. "We were completely unaware of what had happened until we saw the news in the media," she said. According to Chatterjee, officers arrived at the campus the following day but withheld key details, citing official duties and confidentiality.

The police requested access to the college premises on Thursday and asked Chatterjee not to alert the security guard. "They said their visit was confidential. I wasn’t even told the reason at first," she added. Two ground-floor rooms were sealed that day as part of the investigation.

Shockingly, the college authorities were never contacted by the victim or any other students about the incident. “No guard, no staff, no student informed me. I received no phone call or email,” Chatterjee stated. “I only learned of this disaster on Friday through the news.”

Main Accused Was a Former Student, Hired as Temporary Faculty

The primary accused in the case, Monojit Mishra, is a former student of the law college. According to Chatterjee, he had recently been brought on board as a temporary faculty member due to a shortage of permanent teaching staff. Mishra was being paid ₹500 a day for his services.

Chatterjee confirmed that Mishra once held a position in the student wing of the Trinamool Congress, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s ruling party. However, she downplayed his influence on campus. “He used to show off a bit, trying to prove he was someone important, but we didn’t pay much attention — he was just temporary staff,” she explained.

She also pointed out issues with the campus’s security, particularly the guard on duty. “The guard would leave by 1:30 PM every day because of his high blood sugar. He wasn’t consistently present in the evenings,” Chatterjee admitted, raising questions about the safety and oversight within the institution.

Survivor's Chilling Allegations: “I Cried, I Fought, I Begged…”

The survivor has provided a harrowing account in her police complaint. She alleges that on the evening of June 25, three men — identified only as 'J', 'M', and 'P' — cornered her after a meeting of the Trinamool Congress student wing. At around 7:30 PM, two of the accused allegedly forced the guard to vacate his room, locking her inside with 'J', who then attempted to rape her.

“I fought back. I cried and begged him to stop... I even touched his feet,” she told police. “I said, ‘I can’t do this. I have a boyfriend. I love him,’ but he wouldn’t listen.”

With the main gate locked and no help from the guard, the woman said she was dragged into the now-empty guardroom, where 'J' stripped and raped her. When she resisted, he allegedly blackmailed her. She was released at 10:50 PM — but not before being warned to keep silent.

Four Arrested So Far, Including Mishra and Guard

The case has prompted outrage and sparked serious concerns about campus safety and administrative transparency. So far, four individuals have been arrested, including Monojit Mishra and the security guard.
