'Two Watched As I Was Raped': Kolkata Law Student’s In Her Complaint

A 24-year-old law student alleges she was gang-raped inside South Calcutta Law College. Two accused allegedly watched and filmed the act as the third assaulted her.

A 24-year-old first-year law student from South Calcutta Law College has alleged in a police complaint that she was gang-raped by an alumnus and two senior students inside the college campus, while two of them watched the assault unfold without intervening.

The survivor, who had visited the college on June 25 to submit a form, was reportedly confined for nearly four hours—between 7:30 p.m. and 10:50 p.m.—in the institution’s union room and later in the guardroom, where the traumatic incident allegedly took place.

All three accused were arrested on Thursday following her complaint, and a medical examination confirmed evidence consistent with her claims—including signs of forced penetration, bite marks, and nail scratches, a senior Kolkata Police official told PTI. Marks of physical assault were also visible on her neck.

“I Pleaded With Him, But He Wouldn’t Stop”

According to the FIR, the woman named three men, identifying them by initials—‘J’, ‘M’, and ‘P’. She recounted how, after a meeting of the ruling Trinamool Congress’s student wing, she was cornered in a room. She said ‘M’ and ‘P’ stood guard as ‘J’ tried to rape her.

"I begged him to let me go. I even touched his feet," she told the police. "I told him I have a boyfriend, that I love him… but he wouldn’t stop."

She claimed that when she began to experience a panic attack and had difficulty breathing, she asked for an inhaler. One of the accused, 'M', brought it from a nearby medical store—but instead of helping her escape, the abuse continued.

“They Filmed It, Then Threatened Me”

As the horror unfolded, the woman alleges the other two men not only refused to help but filmed the assault. She said they threatened to release the video on social media if she reported the incident.

Her complaint further claims that after a rejected marriage proposal, the mood turned violent. "He undressed me and began raping me… when I resisted, they hit me with a hockey stick," she said. The police have since recovered the stick as evidence, along with bottles and other items found in the room.

One of the accused, reportedly a former student and now a practising criminal lawyer, had also helped the woman become secretary of a college women’s organisation, leading her to initially trust him.

College Guard’s Role Under Lens

Questions are also being raised about the role of the college’s security staff. The woman alleges that the security guard was forced to leave the guardroom before the accused dragged her inside. While she attempted to flee at one point, she said the gate was locked, and the guard "stood helplessly."

“I Want Justice — I’m a Law Student, Now a Victim”

Despite being threatened with violence against her boyfriend and family if she spoke out, the young woman eventually decided to file a formal complaint. “Today, I’ve made up my mind,” she said. “I want justice. I am a law student, and now I am the victim. I want the justice system to work for me.”

Legal and Political Fallout

Chief Police Prosecutor Sourin Ghosal confirmed that all three accused have been charged with gang rape under legal provisions that hold accomplices equally responsible. “Even if only one person commits the act, others present and facilitating it are equally liable,” he said.

The accused, including Manojit Mishra—a former student and unofficial head of the college’s Trinamool Congress student unit (TMCP)—are said to wield considerable influence on campus. Mishra, according to BJP leaders, has appeared in photographs with senior party figures including MP Abhishek Banerjee, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew.

The BJP has accused the ruling party of shielding the perpetrators and likened the case to last year’s RG Kar Medical College rape and murder, sparking a new political flashpoint ahead of next year’s Assembly election.

In its official response, the Trinamool Congress acknowledged that the accused had ties to its youth wing but insisted that no political link would prevent justice from being served.
