In December 2024, two major fire incidents occurred within a span of three hours, one at a residential complex in Nedumbassery and another at a scrap material collection centre near the South railway overbridge, according to The Time Of India (TOI).

The first fire erupted in the parking lot of a residential complex in Nedumbassery after a car caught on fire. The flames quickly spread to three other vehicles soon the building was on fire as well. Firefighters rescued a 20-year-old woman from Vijayawada who was trapped in a room using a ladder.

The other residents were safely evacuated safely. The fire was brought under control after two and a half hours.

Following this, the second fire erupted in a scrap collection centre near the South railway bridge which disrupted train services as well. Nine workers, mostly migrant labourers, were asleep at the site but escaped unscathed after neighbours raised the alarm. After the first batch of fire officials rushed to the scene, 17 other fire units from across the district were called to the scene to contain the blaze.

TOI, close to a dozen cylinders, mainly empty and stored as scrap, were kept at the collection centre. Residual gas in these cylinders likely ignited and exploded due to the rising temperatures. Additionally, some cylinders used for gas cutters were still full, which worsened the intensity of the fire, a fire official explained.
