Karnataka: Man Killed, Brother Injured In Sword Attack In Mangaluru, Communal Tension Flares Up

Police have reached the location and initiated an investigation to trace and arrest the assailants, who escaped right after carrying out the attack.

A man died and his brother was severely injured after a group of assailants reportedly attacked them with a sword in the Mangaluru district of Karnataka on Tuesday.

The incident occurred in Kambodi Kalpane in Bantwal Taluk when the deceased, Rahim, working as a truck driver, along with his brother, was unloading gravel. Suddenly, two miscreants on a motorcycle came and attacked them with a sword.

Following the attack, both were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, where Rahim succumbed to his injuries, while his brother is under treatment, according to a report by News 18.

Police have reached the location and initiated an investigation to trace and arrest the assailants, who escaped right after carrying out the attack. The exact motive behind the incident is still being determined.

Large Crowd Of Locals Gathered

In the meantime, tensions have flared outside Yenepoya Medical College Hospital in Ullal, where Rahim’s body has been placed, as a large crowd of locals gathered, demanding justice.

While the precise cause of the brutal killing remains unclear, State Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao suggested that the act may have been an attempt to disrupt harmony in the communally sensitive area.

“The killing of a person named Abdul Rahman near Kolathamajalu in Mangaluru is condemnable. The real reason for the incident is not known. I have already spoken to Home Minister Shri @DrParameshwara, @DgpKarnataka and Law and Order ADGP in this regard. A sinister attempt to disrupt peace in D.Kannada district is being systematically carried out. This incident seems to be a part of it. I have given strict instructions to the district administration to maintain law and order in the district. I appeal to the people not to listen to any rumors," Dinesh Gundu Rao said in a post on X.

In order to maintain law and order in the area, five talukas of Dakshina Kannada– Bantwal, Belthangady, Kadaba, Puttur and Sullia have been imposed with prohibitory orders till 30 May, 6 pm.

Previously, in Mangaluru, an accused in the murder of a Hindutva activist, Suhas Shetty, was attacked inside a jail. Naushad, popularly known as Chotte Naushad, was among the 11 people apprehended for reportedly playing a key role in the killing of Shetty. Police confirmed that he had helped the main accused to plot the murder.
