The case came to light when Kim’s Hospital in Bengaluru reported the matter to the police raising concerns about food poisoning as the potential cause of the child's death.
Bengaluru news: A five-year-old boy died from suspected food poisoning after consuming a cake that had been brought home by his father, Balaraj, a Swiggy delivery executive in Bengaluru's Bhubaneswari Nagar. Balaraj had taken the cake home after a customer canceled their order.
The incident took place at their home in KP Agrahara and the deceased has been identified as Dheeraj. The issue started after the family members shared a cake got from an order cancelled by customer on a food agregator and had it after dinner.
Soon, Dheeraj fell ill and later Balaraj along with his wife, Nagalakshmi, also became severely ill. Their neighbours immediately rushed the family to Kim’s Hospital since their symptoms worsened. Dheeraj succumbed to suspected food poisoning, while both parents remain in critical condition in the ICU.
The case came to light when Kim’s Hospital reported the matter to the police, raising concerns about food poisoning as the potential cause of the child's death. Due to the parents' critical condition, the police have been unable to obtain details directly from them, leaving much about the incident unclear.
On the incident, a Swiggy spokesperson as quoted by The Hindustan Times said that they were heartbroken by the "unfortunate incident" in Bengaluru and their thoughts were with the family.
Swiggy said that its team visited the hospital and assured all possible support. They also said that they would fully cooperate with the authorities during the investigation.
They emphasised that food safety was their top priority and they ensure that all restaurant partners have an FSSAI license before being listed on the platform.
While food poisoning is the primary suspicion, investigators are also exploring other possibilities, including whether the incident may have been a suicide attempt. The exact cause of the tragedy will only be confirmed after further investigation, once the parents recover and are able to provide more information.
