A 55-year-old Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan allegedly shot himself with his service rifle in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district on Tuesday, officials told news agency PTI. The jawan was an assistant sub-inspector.

As per the information, the CRPF jawan was identified as Rajnath Prasad and he was a resident of Bihar.

PTI has reported that officials have told them that Prasad allegedly shot himself on the chest inside a makeshift CRPF picket along the Tarakote route leading to Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra.

Hearing the gunshot, Prasad's colleagues rushed to the scene. They found Prasad lying dead. The officials have added that police have initiated inquest proceedings for the incident.

As per the officials, the exact motive behind Prasad taking his life is yet to be ascertained.

In the last week of December 2024, a CRPF head constable was found dead in mysterious circumstances in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district. As per IANS, the head constable was identified as Kharat Prakash of G Coy 116 Battalion of CRPF and he was on duty in the district jail. Officials said that Prakash suddenly fell unconscious, and he was immediately shifted to the district hospital in Anantnag town, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

In October 2024 also, a CRPF committed suicide in Naxal-affected Bijapur district. The deceased, identified as Pawan Kumar, was head constable of CRPF's 199th battalion headquarters Patarpara Bhairamgarh and was posted in tower front number two.

Officials said that the jawan shot himself with his service rifle during the duty. He was taken to Community Health Center for treatment. However, the doctors declared the jawan dead on reaching the hospital.
