Members of Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal staged a massive protest on Saturday along with locals over vandalism at Tejaji temple on Tonk Road in Jaipur's Sanganer area, said the police.

As per the locals, unidentified persons damaged the temple's idol at around 3 am and as the news spread through the days, an angry crowd gathered demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible for the vandalism, reported The Indian Express.

The protestors blocked Tonk Road for nearly three hours and burnt tyres near the temple. They also tried to set fire to a petrol pump but were removed after police took prompt action.

Deputy Commissioner of Police East, Tejasvini Gautam said a "catastrophe" was averted by a quick action of the police. At least 20 people have been detained in connection with the demonstration.

Addressing a press conference on Saturday evening, the DCP gave details of the arrested suspect. The suspect was identified as Siddharth Singh, 34, a native of Bikaner and currently residing in the Rajapark area of the state capital.

Disturbed Over Financial Loss

The car was linked to the arrested accused who visited the hotel to meet a friend. As per the DCP, Singh was returning to his place on Friday night and was under the influence of alcohol when he stopped near the temple and ransacked it in a fit of rage over financial loss.

“He stopped his vehicle and entered the temple. After spending some time there, he lifted the idol and threw it," said the DCP adding that Singh told them he was "disturbed due to financial loss."

After being arrested, the accused confessed to the crime and the phone contained a photograph of the temple taken at 3:18 AM, backing his confession.

The police said that Singh realised the gravity of his actions only the next morning when his fiancée informed him about the incident and the protests.
