Hyderabad: Six Arrested After Woman Dies & Over 20 Hospitalised After Consuming Momos
Hyderabad Police revealed that apart from the woman around 20 others were also hospitalised after eating momos sold by the same group of vendors at different locations.
Hyderabad news: Hyderabad police have arrested six individuals on Wednesday in connection with the death of a woman and the hospitalisation of over 20 people due to suspected food poisoning after consuming momos from different joints of an eatery chain. The arrests followed complaints from the victims’ families.
Based on the complaint, Telangana police have registered two cases under charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and sections of the BNS Act, reported PTI.
The incident, which has sent shockwaves across the city, began when Reshma Begum, a 31-year-old single mother, and her daughters, aged 12 and 14, consumed momos from a street vendor in Khairatabad on October 25, as reported by NDTV. Soon after, the family experienced severe symptoms, including diarrhea, stomach pain, and vomiting. Reshma succumbed to her condition on October 27, while her daughters remain under medical care.
Police revealed that around 20 others were also hospitalised after eating momos sold by the same group of vendors at different locations. Officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), with police support, tracked down the vendors and discovered that the food outlets were being run without proper licenses. Food safety officers have since sent samples of the momos for analysis at the state laboratory.
The GHMC has also directed an immediate halt to the vendors’ operations, emphasising stringent action against unlicensed and unhygienic food businesses.
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Food Safety has ordered an immediate prohibition on the production and storage of mayonnaise made from raw eggs, citing recurring food poisoning incidents linked to it. However, the ban does not extend to mayonnaise produced with pasteurized eggs, provided it meets safety regulations and holds valid FSSAI certification.
The decision was made during a review meeting of Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha with the Food Safety Department.
