VIDEO: Truck Falls Into Giant Ditch In Gurugram As Road Caves In After Heavy Rain

Widespread waterlogging paralysed Gurugram, prompting an Orange alert from the IMD for continued heavy rain.

A massive ditch swallowed a jumbo truck after a portion of the road caved in on the Southern Peripheral Highway (SPH) in Gurugram.

The incident took place at around 10:30 pm on Wednesday when the truck, en route through the SPH, suddenly fell into a crater that had formed moments earlier. The truck overturned and has since remained lodged inside the ditch.

The crater was formed due to the accumulation of rainwater following unprecedented rainfall in the area. According to the India Meteorological Department, Gurugram recorded 133 mm of rainfall in a span of 12 hours, with over 103 mm falling within just 90 minutes. The Wazirabad tehsil nearby recorded 122 mm in the same period.

The truck driver, fortunately, escaped with minor injuries and was called to the local police station for a statement, according to an NDTV report.

The section of SPR that experienced the damage had reportedly undergone sewer-related maintenance work recently, and a detailed technical inspection is awaited.

The impact of the heavy rain was not limited to just SPR but also several other routes in Delhi and the NCR.

Key locations such as Basai, Golf Course Extension Road, Rajiv Chowk, Sheetla Mata Road, Sadar Bazaar, Bus Adda Road, and residential colonies witness waterlogging.

By Thursday morning, Gurugram roads were at a standstill with the Narsinghpur stretch of the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway being the worst affected.

"Waterlogging has been reported at many places across Gurugram due to heavy rain since last night. Traffic jams with movement disruption may take more than usual time to commute," the Gurugram traffic police said in a social media post.

The IMD has sounded an Orange alert for Gurugram and surrounding cities in the National Capital Region (NCR), with forecasts of continued heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 24 to 48 hours.
