Five Dead, Several Injured After Portion Of Building Collapses In Thane; CM Fadnavis Announces Rs.5 Lakh

A building slab collapse in Kalyan Dombivli killed at least four, including a child, and injured four others. A Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation official confirmed the fatalities.

Five people, including a child, were killed and four others were injured after a slab of one of the four floors of a residential building collapse on Tuesday, reports news agency PTI quoting officials. According to the report, a Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation official confirmed the death toll.

The official said that a rescue operation involving teams of Fire Brigade and Disaster response force is going on in full swing.

"A relief and rescue operation involving teams of Fire Brigade and Disaster Response Force is going on in full swing at the spot," the official said as quoted by news agency PTI.

The incident reportedly took place in the Saptashrungi building located in the Karpewadi area in Kalyan East. Soon after the information of the incident was received, the rescue team of KDMC and the fire department reached the spot for rescue work.

According to the Times Of India report, a part of the inside of the building has collapse from the second floor to the ground floor. The report further mentions quoting sources that the building was in the lists of dangerous building. A notice was also issued to vacate it before monsoon.

"The Thane district disaster management cell received the call at around 2:55 pm that the slab of the four-storied building crashed," said Yasin Tadvi, a senior official coordinating the emergency response.

He said that the Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF) has been called to assist in the operation.

"On the fourth floor of Shri Saptashringi building in Kalyan, flooring work was going on. During the renovation work, the slab of the fourth floor collapsed, taking with it slabs of all the subsequent lower floors. 11 people were trapped in the rubble. Fire brigade and other teams rushed to the spot and started with the rescue work. 5 people have been rescued and 6 people have died in the accident. Clearance work is going on... There were a total of 52 families living here... This building will soon be demolished because its condition has deteriorated with time... Alternate arrangements for the families will be made…,”Kalyan SDO Vishwas Digambar Gujar said as quoted by news agency ANI.

Reacting to the development, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis posted on X, "In a tragic incident, 6 citizens lost their lives due to the roof collapse of a building in Kalyan. I pay my heartfelt tributes to them. We share the grief of their families. The rescue operation has now been completed at this place, and the Municipal Commissioner himself was present at the spot. 5 people were injured in this incident and are being treated in the hospital. The district administration is monitoring it and the condition of the injured is stable. I pray to God that their condition improves soon. The state government will provide financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the deceased"
