UP Man Who Set Himself On Fire Near New Parliament Building Dies After Suffering 95% Burns
A man from Uttar Pradesh who set himself on fire near Parliament died on Thursday night.
The man who set himself on fire near the new Parliament building on Thursday died after suffering 95 per cent burns. The victim, identified as Jitendra from Bagpat, Uttar Pradesh was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where doctors declared him dead on Thursday night.
The man in his early 30s was rushed to the hospital by security personnel deployed near Parliament and was undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the burns department, a professor in the department of medicine at the hospital said.
The incident took place at around 3:35 pm near the Railway Bhawan opposite the Parliament building, said Delhi Fire Services.
"He set himself on fire at the roundabout near Rail Bhawan. The local police and railway police, along with some people, immediately extinguished the fire and the person was sent to hospital," the official statement said.
As per the initial probe, the man took the extreme step due to a dispute with some people back home in Bagpat, the statement added.
He sat on a footpath for a few minutes, carrying a bag containing some clothes and a notebook, before pouring some chemicals over himself and setting himself on fire, a police officer said.
"With his body engulfed in the flames, he ran on the road and fell. Security personnel put the blanket on him to douse the fire," he said.
The man took a train to Delhi's Shahdara railway station on Wednesday morning, said the police, adding his half-burnt backpack and some other belongings were seized from the spot.
A general ticket costing Rs 15 was also recovered from his pocket, said the cops.
According to a PTI report quoting sources, police have found that some cases were going against Jitendra and his family members in Bagpat and he was upset over it.
The police officer said the man's family members have been contacted and further investigations were underway.
