Delhi Proposes Rule Change To Claim Impounded Vehicles Amid Parking Space Crunch. Details Here

The Delhi Transport Department proposes a reduction in the impounding period for vehicles from 90 days to one month. Impounded vehicles will be auctioned if not claimed within a month.

A latest notification by the Delhi Transport department has proposed reducing the period for releasing impounded vehicles from 90 days to one month, officials said. This move comes amid the shortage of space for parking and keeping of such vehicle.

In the notification, the department has sought the opinion of stakeholders on the Delhi Maintenance and Management of Parking (Amendment) Rules, 2024. The draft amendment, along with public feedback, will be considered by Delhi government within one month from the date of publication of the notification.

As per the notification, if the registered vehicle, which has been impounded by authorities in Delhi, will be put up for auction if not claimed by their respective owner within a month as compared to the 90-day window earlier.

An official said, “Due to the 90-day period, vehicles were piling up at the pit and there is also a space issue…So, keeping this in mind, now, the department has made changes, according to which the window period has been reduced from 90 days to 30 days."

If it lapses, a 15-day notice is served. If the vehicle is still not released, the impounding agency puts it up for public auction. The new draft which amends the 90-day period to 30 days, also shortens the notice period to seven days. Making changes in the Delhi Parking and Management Rules 2019, the notification stated that if such a vehicle is kept for more than seven days, the safe custody charges will be doubled.

As per the details, the period for getting unregistered/deregistered vehicles released will be 10 days. After that, a seven-day notice will be served. If still not released, they will be put for auction.

The transport department officials said there are three pits for keeping towed away, impounded vehicles for various violations, and the towing charges are in between Rs 200-1500.
