'Don't Worry About Salary': Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Urges Teachers On Protest To Return To School

Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has appealed to protesting teachers to return to work after the Supreme Court invalidated their appointments. She assured that their salaries will be protected.

In a heartfelt plea on Tuesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called on thousands of protesting teachers to end their sit-in and return to work, assuring them that their salaries and positions remain secure, at least for now.

Her appeal comes in the wake of a Supreme Court verdict that nullified the appointments of numerous teachers recruited through the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC). The ruling has triggered widespread unrest, with scores of affected educators staging a continuous protest outside the WBSSC office in Salt Lake.

Speaking at an administrative event in Midnapore, Banerjee addressed the issue head-on, acknowledging the anxiety gripping the teaching community. "Why do you have to sit out in the heat? Please return to your jobs. Have faith in us. The government will protect your salaries," she said.

"The Supreme Court had stopped your salaries and slashed your jobs. But we filed a review petition, where we mentioned that you will get your salaries... No has to resort to riots and propaganda for this," she said.

"You don't need to worry about who is tainted and who is not," she said, as reported by PTI. "What matters is whether you still have your job and whether your salary is coming on time. The responsibility of identifying the tainted and untainted lies with the government and the judiciary," she said.

Despite her assurances, the protestors remain resolute. For many, the Supreme Court's order has not just impacted their livelihood — it has shaken their sense of purpose and professional identity. Yet, Banerjee emphasised that the state stands with them during this uncertain time.

"We guarantee your employment for now, and you will receive your salaries," she affirmed. "Please go back to your schools and resume teaching. I’ve reiterated this multiple times since last night — we are with you."

The protesting teachers, however, refused to relent, calling for the separation of the "qualified" and "unqualified" candidates. "The government should first clarify who the eligible and ineligible candidates are. Otherwise, the sword of termination will keep hanging over all our heads," a teacher told ABP Ananda.
