WATCH: Chennai Receives Widespread Downpour, IMD Predicts More Showers; Yellow Alert Issued

The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall at isolated places over Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur along with a few other districts, and Puducherry and Karaikal area.

Chennai news: Chennai witnessed intense rainfall bringing showers across multiple areas, including Koyambedu, Vadapalani, KK Nagar, MGR Nagar, Saligramam, Egmore, Thousand Lights, and Guindy on early Thursday. This weather pattern, attributed to a cyclonic circulation over the southern Bay of Bengal, has led to an alert by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), cautioning residents of thunderstorms and lightning.

On Thursday, IMD issues yellow alert for Chennai, Kancheepuram and other nine districts in the state.

Meteorologists point to a cyclonic circulation that has developed in the Bay of Bengal, extending up to 3.1 km above sea level, with strengthened easterly winds adding to the downpour. According to IMD, "Yesterday’s cyclonic circulation over central parts of south Bay of Bengal persists and now extends upto 3.1 km above mean sea level. Yesterday’s cyclonic circulation over Gulf of Mannar & adjoining Sri Lanka coast has become less marked. Yesterday’s cyclonic circulation over central parts of south Arabian Sea has become less marked."
