Chenab Bridge Ready For Public: PM Modi To Inaugurate World's Highest Railway Bridge On June 6

Union Minister Jitendra Singh shared the update in a social media post.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Chenab Bridge, which is the world's highest railway bridge, in Jammu and Kashmir on June 6. Union Minister Jitendra Singh shared the update in a social media post.

"History in the making… Just 3 days to go! The mighty Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest railway bridge, stands tall in Jammu and Kashmir. Part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL). Built to withstand nature’s toughest tests. PM Narendra Modi to inaugurate the Chenab Bridge on 6th June, 2025. A proud symbol of New India’s strength and vision!" he wrote.

The Chenab bridge is an engineering marvel that stands 359 metres above the riverbed, dwarfing the Eiffel Tower by 35 metres, and symbolises India's ambitious stride in infrastructure and strategic capabilities. The bridge was completed and inaugurated in August 2022, but the first trial run of a full electric train was conducted on June 20 last year.

The Chenab bridge is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, which includes the Banihal-Sangaldan section (48.1 km) inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 20, 2024.

The USBRL was declared a project of national importance in 2002, as it envisaged connecting Kashmir to the mainland via railways. Under the USBRL project, the Indian Railways has since laid a 272-km line from Udhampur to Baramulla.

The project saw the inauguration of its Phase I, covering the 118 km long Qazigund-Baramulla section, in October 2009. In the subsequent years, the 18-km Banihal-Qazigund section was inaugurated in June 2013, while the 25-km Udhampur-Katra section came up in July 2014.

The Chenab bridge is the most significant part of the project. Spanning 1,315 metres, this structure promises to enhance regional connectivity and economic prospects.
